PIFS’ Screening: There will be blood ( 黑金風雲 )

The Plot:
In the early years of the 20th century, Daniel Plainview is an oil prospector. Based on information sold to him by Paul Sunday, he travels to Little Boston, California and begins to buy land, starting with the Sunday's farm. He wants to buy up all of the land in the area and smooth talks the locals into selling by promising that he will build roads, schools and churches. He has no intention of doing so of course and his only purpose is to make money. Over the course of his endeavors, men die, the locals get nothing and Plainview gets rich. In his life he makes few friends and many enemies and even his adopted son H.W. is eventually alienated.

20世紀初，美國西海岸的油田工業蓬勃發展，石油鑽探者柏丹尼（丹尼爾路易斯）發現了一個大油田。為了鑽油致富，他與當地的教會領袖，展開連場明爭暗鬥，雙方角力達十數年之久。黑色黃金令人喪失理智，暴露了人性最醜惡一面。親情、友情、道義，在利益之下均灰飛煙滅；石油大亨除了財富和仇恨，還可擁有甚麼？

Conditions

Seat reservation will start outside the venue 15 minutes before the screening. Seats will be available on a first-come-first-served basis (for PolyU students and staff). There will be a post-screening session (in English) about Fame and Wealth with Dr. James Xing where light refreshments will be served.

New Library Regulation

Only PIFS members with the valid membership card (the newly updated ) can borrow DVDs from the CILL library.

1. Each member can borrow only one DVD at a time and keep it for two working days .

2. Borrowers should present their staff or student ID card and membership card to the staff at the CILL counter.

3. Borrowers' PIFS membership card will be kept by our staff until the DVD is returned.

4. An overdue fine of $2 per working day will be charged for the first 5 overdue days .the fine will increase up to $5 per working day starting from the 6th overdue day.

5. PIFS will cancel the membership of a borrower who returns the DVD late for more than 15 days .

6. A borrower should ,before leaving CILL, ensure that the DVD issued to him on loan is complete and undamaged .

7. If any DVD borrowed is lost or damaged, the borrower shall be liable to pay PIFS such sum of money as PIFS considers necessary to replace such a DVD. In addition, the borrower may be required to pay a surcharge amounting to 20% of such price .

8.All VCDs, VHS and Books have been removed from ClLL PIFS Library. If you want to borrow them, please send e-mail to us or left messages on our Fackbook or Blog. We are sorry for any inconvenient caused.

The PolyU International Film Society (PIFS) is pleased to announce the following 3 screenings of our theme month.

The legend: Clint Eastwood

With a career that spans over six decades, from television, to hit movies, to winning Academy Awards, Clint Eastwood has established himself as one of the greatest and most respected actors and directors Hollywood and the world has ever seen. Although he is aging now, he continues to thrive and will undoubtedly continue to surprise audiences.

The following three award-winning movies directed by Clint Eastwood are going to be shown:

First Screening: Gran Torino (驅．逐)

Plot:
In Michigan, the grumpy widower Walt Kowalski is a Korean War veteran full of prejudice that has just lost his beloved wife Dorothy. He is one of the last Caucasian Americans in his neighborhood and does not have good relationship with his sons and their families; therefore he is a lonely man. When his teenager neighbor Thao Vang Lor is pressed by his cousin Smokie to join his Hmong gang, he is assigned to steal the Gran Torino of Walt as part of his initiation in the gang……

故事內容:

一個固執的韓戰老兵（奇連依士活飾），他的退休生活就是每天修房子喝啤酒，雖然已過世的妻子總希望他不要這麼固執，但他除了愛犬黛西外，他誰都不相信！
多年過去，他的鄰居不是死了就是搬離這個社區，漸漸地，這個社區被東南亞移民佔據，他對這些黃皮膚的人事事都看不順眼，尤其還有一些不良少年，天天在安靜的社區裡閒逛，更是讓他痛恨。
華特有一輛1972年福特老爺車「Torino」，這輛車雖然年代久遠但是依然光可鑑人，華特從它出廠的那一天就悉心照料。有一天，這群不良少年把歪腦筋動到他的經典老爺車上...。

Second Screening: Mystic River (懸河殺機)

Plot:
During a summer in 1975, Dave Boyle and two friends, Jimmy and Sean, are playing on a sidewalk in Boston when Dave is abducted by two men and subjected to sexual abuse over a period of several days. Eventually escaping, but haunted into adulthood by his trauma, Dave becomes a primary suspect when Jimmy's daughter, Katie, is found murdered. Sean, assigned to investigate the crime, finds himself facing both demons from the past and demons in the present as the circumstances surrounding Katie's death are uncovered.

故事內容:

三名兒時玩伴西恩、大衛與吉米，在25年後於波士頓重逢，卻是因一樁悲劇而起：吉米的女兒凱蒂死於一場謀殺。 西恩是負責偵辦此案的警探。

Third Screening: Letters from Iwo Jima (硫磺島戰書)

Plot:
The island of Iwo Jima stands between the American military force and the home islands of Japan. Therefore the Imperial Japanese Army is desperate to prevent it from falling into American hands and providing a launching point for an invasion of Japan. General Tadamichi Kuribayashi is given command of the forces on the island and sets out to prepare for the imminent attack. General Kuribayashi, however, does not favor the rigid traditional approach recommended by his subordinates, and resentment and resistance fester among his staff. In the lower echelons, a young soldier, Saigo, a poor baker in civilian life, strives with his friends to survive the harsh regime of the Japanese army itself, all the while knowing that a fierce battle looms. When the American invasion begins, both Kuribayashi and Saigo find strength, honor, courage, and horrors beyond imagination.

故事內容:
